Kids' media safety map: age ratings vs. chat and spending

How to read the map

• Left to right: the official age rating (ESRB, MPA, TV ratings, App Store, or the maker's age label), from all ages to 17+.
• Bottom to top: how many of three flags a title has: chat with other players or strangers, purchases with real money, and paid random items such as loot boxes. For toys, only blind boxes count; for YouTube channels, the same three flags as apps. Movies and shows have no chat or in-app purchases to count, so they sit on the bottom line.
• The four corners: bottom left is lower-rated titles without chat or spending; top left is lower-rated titles with them; bottom right is higher-rated titles without them; top right has both.
• Not on the map: titles with no official age rating (some YouTube channels, consoles such as the Switch 2, Omegle) and films or games that aren't out yet. Nearby rating labels share a column, for example 7+, 8+, PG, and TV-Y7.

What this map is, and isn't

It's a count of facts from official ratings, app store listings, and company terms, collected in our Is it good for kids? guides; each guide links its sources and shows when it was checked. It isn't a safety score, and the titles are ones we chose because parents search for them, not a random or complete sample, so counts on this page describe this list, not all media. How we review. For fixed numbers you can cite, see the Kids' Media Risk Index.
